Paul seems to approve....
Now, I know you all might not have heard of Ryan Adams (and if at this point you're confusing him with Bryan Adams, please feel free to find somewhere painful to punch yourself), but it's a fair bet you've heard at least one of his songs. While being a fantastic singer/songwriter in his own right, he's also worked with Willie Nelson, Beth Orton, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, Adam Duritz, Gillian Welch, Elton John, Oasis, Phil Lesh and many many others. His songs have been covered by Bono and the Corrs (same song covered by Tim McGraw as well) and others. The bottom-line is the guy's a genius when it comes to writing and playing tunes. Everyone I've had listen to him has ended up really enjoying his stuff.
Unfortunately, On January 14th, 2009, he announced his retirement from music due to Menière's Disease (at typing that, Dagny gave a big sigh; she's a fan of his tunes as well). Then less than a month later he announced his engagement to Mandy Moore. And then in March 2009 he announced his Orion project, which was a diversion to his Metal interests.
So let's just presume here for a bit, with the timeline mixed in: He's dating Mandy Moore. He or she wants to get married. She doesn't want to marry him if he's touring all the time. So he quits music. After three weeks, she decides that's symbolic enough of a time frame, and agrees to marry him. After one month of planning, they're married. And less than three weeks later, he's announcing his plans to record and release a metal album and get back into music.
Sounds about right. Not that I have a lot of experience with marriage or anything....but that sounds about right.
So now we have Orion. And it's interesting. It's not great, but it's not bad either, but it's certainly not in his wheelhouse. But I will say that if you can get your hands on a copy, it's worth checking out. But you have to promise to listen to it three times at least, because it's not going to be what you're expecting of Ryan Adams at all, but somehow everything you like about him is still in there. And since it's admittedly not real Metal music, but "Sci-Fi Metal", I guess that excuses it from all of the real Metal enthusiasts out there.
made of sci-fi metal
Also made of sci-fi metal
Also also made of sci-fi metal
At any rate, I'm digressing about Metal. So we've got this new (released in June of this year), really interesting album from Ryan Adams. Totally worth checking out.
But WAIT!!! There's MORE!!!!!
As it turns out, we've still got at least Black Hole AND Cardinology III/IV (as you can see from deeper in this thread) to look forward to! Wow! Three new Ryan Adams albums this year!!!!
But you think that's it?!?! No! No way, no way!
According to Ryan Adams' twitter page (WARNING! It's also full of all kinds of other super-random stuff), he's been in NYC recording a new album. And that is really exciting and interesting (but it all happened several weeks ago, and is probably only exciting and interesting to myself and a few other select people).
Aaaaaaaand that's a post.
Wait! You know Orion?
